Keystone Custom Decks is a family-owned American outdoor living company that designs and constructs decks, patios, porches, pergolas, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, masonry work, and related enhancements. The company is based in East Earl, Pennsylvania, and serves clients throughout Pennsylvania and upstate New York.[1]
History
Keystone Custom Decks was founded in 1983 by Amos Esh.[2] Amos built the business on a philosophy of ethical leadership and customer-first service. Esh reportedly made business decisions that prioritized client satisfaction, even when they resulted in project losses for the company.[3] The company remained under Esh’s leadership until his death in 2021.[4][5]
Following Esh’s passing, leadership passed to his sons. The company faced several challenges during this period, including a fire that damaged its showroom in 2021 and the death of Kevin Esh—one of Amos Esh’s sons and a company partner—in a plane crash in 2022.[5][6][7] Despite these events, Keystone Custom Decks continued to operate and expand under the next generation of leadership, including marketing director Marcus Stoltzfus.[8]
Services and operations
Originally focused on custom deck construction, Keystone Custom Decks has expanded its services to include patios, outdoor kitchens, screened and open porches, pergolas, fireplaces, water features, swimming pools, spas, and stamped concrete installations.[2]
The company offers 3D renderings as part of its design process and uses a turnkey approach, managing all aspects of outdoor construction projects—from design to permitting, construction, and warranty service—in-house. This approach allows clients to work with one company through the entire project lifecycle.[1]
Locations and service area
Keystone Custom Decks is headquartered in East Earl, located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It operates additional offices in Keuka Park, New York, and serves multiple counties throughout Pennsylvania and upstate New York.[9]
In Pennsylvania, the company serves areas such as King of Prussia, Harrisburg, Lewistown, Chester Springs, Chambersburg, and Ivyland. In New York, it serves Rochester, Manchester, Dresden, and surrounding communities.[9]
Awards and recognition
Keystone Custom Decks has received several industry accolades, including the Best of Houzz awards in 2018 and 2019, as well as the Angie’s List Super Service Award in 2017 and 2018.[9] These awards recognize quality service and high levels of customer satisfaction within the home improvement industry.[10][11]
Business model and community engagement
Keystone Custom Decks is privately owned and operated by the Esh family. The company has grown from a small operation into a regional business employing over 100 individuals.[5] It maintains a relational approach to customer service, often going beyond standard business expectations by offering personal touches such as thank-you gifts and continuous communication during projects.[8] The company is the official outdoor living sponsor of Penn State Athletics, and has sponsored regional events such as the Yates County Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner.[12][13] In addition, the company regularly participates in trade events such as the Nashville Fall Home Show.[14]
