Etymology
From Middle Korean 바독〮 (pàtwók).
Noun
바독 (patwok)
Descendants
- Korean: 바둑 (baduk)
Middle Korean
Etymology
Most likely 밭 (pàth, “cultivated field”) + *돍〯 (twǒlk, “stone”), in reference to the checkerboard lines resembling a plowed field and the stones used to play the game (Martin 1996, p. 36). Other etymologies for the first element have been speculatively offered but are not plausible.
