From Middle High German strāfe, from Proto-West Germanic *strēpōn, of uncertain ultimate origin, but possibly related to *streupan (“to squeeze, press, graze”). Compare Luxembourgish Strof, Dutch straf, German Low German Straaf, German Strafe.
