Probably from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *k-al-aqpaq (compare Indonesian pelepah from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *palaqpaq, reconstructed from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *p-al-aqpaq). Cognate of Indonesian kelapa and Sundanese ᮊᮜᮕ (kalapa).
