Darjeeling Hills University (abbreviated as DHU) is a public state university in Darjeeling district, West Bengal, India. The university was established in 2021 by The Greenfield University Act, 2018 of the Government of West Bengal.[2][3] This act was later amended by The Greenfield University (Amendment) Act, 2019 which replaced the name 'Greenfield University' with 'Darjeeling Hills University'. The university became active with the appointment of the first Vice-Chancellor (VC), Subiresh Bhattacharya, in November 2021.[4][5][6]
History
In September 2022, following the arrest of the VC Subiresh Bhattacharya, Om Prakash Mishra was appointed as a caretaker interim VC.[7] In March 2023, Prem Poddar was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor for a short period of three months.[8] After the expiry of his term, no interim or full-term Vice-Chancellor has been appointed. Until March 2024, the administrative officers of the University of North Bengal were assigned to administer both universities. At present, faculty members from Darjeeling Government College have been assigned to handle the administrative affairs of the university.
Campus
The main campus of the university is currently being built in Jogighat, Mungpoo in Darjeeling district. Currently, the university is using the ITI Building in Bhasmey, Mungpoo as its campus. Due to the university commencing operations during the Covid-19 pandemic, classes were being held online. In June 2023, classes started to be held offline at the respective departments at the University of North Bengal.[9] In April 2024, on-campus classes officially commenced at the Darjeeling Hills University campus (ITI Building) in Mungpoo.[10]
Academics
The university offers master's degree courses in Nepali, English, History, Political Science, Mass Communication, and Mathematics.[4]
Upcoming department will be Department of Education, Hindi, Women Studies.
Recognition by University Grants Commission
The university is recognized as a degree-granting institution under Section 2(f) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.[11][12] The date of notification for inclusion in the UGC List of Universities was September 13, 2022, and the date of inclusion in the list was September 30, 2022.[11]
Notable Person
- Sandeepan Mukharjee, Department of Mathematics - first gold medalist[13] of Darjeeling Hills University from the inaugural session of 2021-23. He secured 86% in M.Sc. Mathematics, which was the highest across all departments.
