Description |
Photograph of the Irving Place Theatre on the corner of Irving Place and East 15th Street in the Union Square neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. The theatre was built in 1888 as Amberg's German Theatre, and was renamed to the Irving Place Theatre in 1893. It was converted to a warehouse for the S.Klein department store c.1962, and demolished in the early 1980s to make way for the Zeckendorf Towers. |

Other information |
The status of this photo is uncertain, since no date of origin or copyright status is given by the library, but it must have been made between 1893, when the theatre was renamed, and 1938, when a photograph by Berneice Abbot shows that the original facade has been altered considerably. It's likely, from the look of the photograph, that it was made prior to 1923, and is therefore in the public domain, but because that is not certain, it is being uploaded here under the NFCC rules as a fair-use image. |
