This dinosaur restoration is highly hypothetical, as very little fossil material of the animal is known. Use of this image might be controversial. Reason: Known only from a partial skull. Body plan is purely speculative & is based on related ankylosaurs |
Summary
DescriptionTsagantegia Skeleton Reconstruction.jpg |
English: Skeletal diagram featuring the skull holotype of the ankylosaur Tsagantegia longicranialis. It was discovered and unearthed from the Bayan Shireh Formation of Mongolia, at the locality of Tsagan Teg, and described in 1993 by the Russian paleontologist Tatyana Alekseyevna Tumanova. Although only having one element, its skull is pretty much complete.[1] Comparisons with Talarurus indicates niche partitioning between these genera, Tsagantegia being a browser, and Talarurus a grazer.[2]
Apparently, Tumanova has measured its skull at 30 cm (300 mm)[1][3], however, it seems that the actual length is about 38 cm (380 mm), as indicated by Arbour & Currie 2015.[4] In addition, the figured skull appears to be a "reconstructed" line drawing, and not a direct illustration of the fossil. The lateral view here has been based on James I. Kirkland, featuring the real fossil.[5] Nevertheless, the estimated size, 6 m (20 ft), is following Tumanova 2000, which seems to fit the size of the skull.[3] Overall anatomy based on Jack Mayer Wood.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Español: Diagrama esquelético mostrando el holotipo craneano del ankylosaurio Tsagantegia longicranialis.
