Membakut District (Malay: Daerah Membakut) is an administrative district in the Malaysian state of Sabah, part of the Interior Division. The Membakut railway station located in the district is one of the stops for Sabah State Railway.
History
Since October 2023, Membakut has became one of the full district (daerah penuh) of Sabah, East Malaysia.[1] Before elevated into a full district, it was once called Pekan Kecil Membakut or in English: Small Town of Membakut and was declared as a Small District in 1977. While the Office Building of the Small District of Membakut was completed in 1978. Now the Gazette dated 9 February 2023 has declared that Membakut has been upgraded to a full district. Since 30 March 2022, the Membakut District Launching Ceremony was held on 14 October 2023 and was completed by the 16th Sabah's Chief Minister Hajiji Noor. With the rating as a full district, the area that used to be only 132.8 square km has increased to 1,480 square km. For district demarcation, the Membakut District covers the Lumat area up to Kayau.[2][3]
