The National Salvation Movement (Movimiento de Salvación Nacional) is a conservative political party in Colombia, founded by Alvaro Gómez Hurtado in 1990. At the legislative elections held on 10 March 2002, the party, as one of the many small parties, won parliamentary representation. In the simultaneous legislative elections of 2006, the party won 1 out of 166 Deputies and no senators, after which the party was disbanded.
After being inactive for 15 years, the party was relaunched in 2021 by Enrique Gómez Martínez, who was its presidential candidate in the 2022 Colombian presidential election.
Origin and 1990 elections
For the turbulent presidential elections of 1990, Álvaro Gómez Hurtado , a former member of the Conservative Party and son of the former conservative president Laureano Gómez , decided to launch his presidential candidacy (the third of his career and the first as an independent) as a conservative dissident, after his defeat in the 1986 elections, in the name of conservatism.
Gómez competed against the conservative official candidate, journalist Rodrigo Lloreda (supported by former president Misael Pastrana Borrero ), whom he defeated easily, but he could not do the same with the liberal candidate, César Gaviria , who ended up winning the presidency on May 27, 1990.
