[edit]In "The Mid Niigata Prefecture Earthquake," I think "Central" is a better word than "Mid." Photojpn.org 09:55, 7 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Agreed! But that line is a quote of the term the JMA selected. The Japanese Wikipedia article says, "気象庁命名の正式名称は平成16年(2004年)新潟県中越地震(英語:The Mid Niigata Prefecture Earthquake in 2004)。" It goes on to explain that in English, people use a different term. If it were my word, I'd advocate changing it — and please do feel free to change my writing! Fg2 10:21, Nov 7, 2004 (UTC)
- OK well, if that's the official translation, then we can't do anything about it. I think most people will just call it the "Niigata earthquake" or "Chuetsu earthquake." Photojpn.org 20:47, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- I agree again. Most people say "Kobe earthquake" and ignore the JMA term "Great Hanshin Earthquake" — the official English term places Osaka ("Han") first and Kobe ("Shin") second, and ignores Awaji. By damage, it probably should have been "Kobe-Awaji Earthquake."
I think it would have been nice if it included a table of the shindo scale.
- The shindo scale is important to the article. The information is only a click away (shindo is a live link); do you feel it's important to include it in the article on this earthquake? My personal feeling is that it's best to keep the table in the shindo article rather than repeat it in each article on an earthquake (it saves space that way, and keeps the earthquake article focused on the particular quake). Merge
[edit]I suggest merge 2004 Derailment of Joetsu Shinkansen to 2004 Chūetsu earthquake. Derailment of Joetsu Shinkansen is an accident caused by the Chuetsu earthquake. In addition, there are no sources on 2004 Derailment of Joetsu Shinkansen. 126.161.93.227 (talk) 08:19, 1 October 2022 (UTC)
