Title
Should the title of this page be 2007 Niigata-kenoki Earthquake to match up with the english title as per the japanese wikipedia pageXinJeisan 14:59, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, how about 2007 Niigata-kenoki Earthquakes. There's been a second, equally strong quake. --Elliskev 15:01, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- when was that? just like in 2004 ... XinJeisan 15:04, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- Here is the USGS link. --Elliskev 15:06, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- That said that the second one was 5.8, I think that would qualify as an aftershock. In Chuetsu in 2004, they were actually was a series of earthquakes at the same magnitude close to each other .. a 5 hour difference with a weaker shake I think would be an aftershock, wouldn't it?XinJeisan 15:09, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- There's another in the Sea of Japan - currently listed as 6.8. Here's the list. --Elliskev 15:11, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- Different prefectures though, the first was off Niigata Prefecture while the 6.8 was off Kyoto Prefecture. About a 4 degree difference in longitude. – Chacor 15:17, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- That clearly shows my ignorance. So is the second notable enough to change the title somehow, or do we need to wait for more impact information? --Elliskev 15:21, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- How about July 2007 northwest Japan earthquakes or similar? It's really difficult to get a good geographical (cardinal point) description of the area - would this be more SW Japan coast than NW Japan? So maybe two articles would be better? I don't know. – Chacor 15:38, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- Do we need to wait for a source identifying them as being linked? --Elliskev 15:41, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- Not necessarily, no, I don't think so. It'd be just one article on two quakes that happened to occur on the same day in the same general area? – Chacor 15:42, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- Maybe 2007 Marine Day earthquakes? I don't know either. It would be nice to get some input from editors from Japan. --Elliskev 15:50, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
SomebodyUser:Ehroru changed the article text to Chuetsu Offshore Earthquake. If this is a better name, should we move the article to 2007 Chuetsu offshore earthquake? If so, what gets capitalized? --Elliskev 21:15, 16 July 2007 (UTC)- The official english name is in this document here [1]. I would think that the name of the title should be the official name, with a note of its meaning in English is more encyclopedic.XinJeisan 21:55, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- I'm on dial-up right now and don't want to download the 10MB required to view the source. Are you saying that the official name is Chuetsu offshore quake? If so, I agree that the article should be moved to reflect the official name. I'd add 2007 at the beginning to line-up with other Wikipedia article names. --Elliskev 23:55, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

2007 Chuetsu earthquake
A similar article was created at 2007 Chuetsu earthquake; I merged the contents into this article. -- timc talk 17:12, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- I tried searching for this article, but I couldn't find it, so I used a link from the article on the leaking reactor. Thank you for merging them. Cumulus Clouds 18:39, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- I think I was the one who first made the links. I was thinking about the 2004 Chuetsu earthquake, but didn't realize the difference in location of the two quakes. It should be most correct as it is now, thanks for your hard work. -Theanphibian (talk • contribs) 21:45, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- But this earthquake is called "Chuetsu offshore earthquake" in Japanese..! Wouldn't 2007 Chuetsu earthquake be more appropriate? - Sir Poke
- And the plot thickens... -Theanphibian (talk • contribs) 05:30, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm considering importing this [2] over here. -Theanphibian (talk • contribs) 14:04, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
Moved material
This is from Niigata Prefecture and is mostly redundant or contradictory with what's in this article, but here it is in case there's anything that should be added. -- Beland 03:13, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
- the first at 10:19 local time[1] and the last at 15:53 local time[2] (aftershocks are continuing as of this writing[3] 21:47, 16 July 2007 (UTC)). The biggest quake measured 6-upper on the Japan Meteorological Agency seismic intensity scale in Niigata[4], and 6.7 on the Richter scale according to the U.S. Geological Survey.[5]
Tectonic summary
The "tectonic summary" chapter is, IMHO, too specific and hard to understand for laymen. Also, it's based on the U.S. report, which differs from the JMA one - wich should be considered the most reliable, since it's Japan, not the U.S., we're talking about here. Sir Poke 14:03, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
- actually, I just realized it's copied straight from the source - [3]. Isn't that a problem? Sir Poke 14:07, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
- Works created by an agency of the United States government are public domain at the moment of creation. That doesn't mean that the content is appropriate for the article, but copying shouldn't be an issue. -- timc talk 17:55, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Renamed
Since there didn't seem to be too much disagreement about renaming the article, I have moved it to 2007 Chūetsu offshore earthquake. Please let me know if this creates any controversy. -- timc talk 21:38, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
- Sounds good, I appreciate you changing all the pointers as well. -Theanphibian (talk • contribs) 22:26, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
