Backwards compatibility
- Like Autoconf, Automake can be quite hard to deal with because it is not entirely backwards compatible. For example, a project created with automake 1.4 will not necessarily work with automake 1.9.
If true, that's a pretty tough situation, considering that the entire purpose of autoconf and automake is portability. How likely is this to be a problem? - furrykef (Talk at me) 13:52, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
- Also, no similar statement is made at autoconf or GNU Build System. I think this statement should have a citation at least. - furrykef (Talk at me) 13:55, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
- Heh. You have clearly not been an autoconf/automake user! Its possible that things have improved in the last decade, though; it was pretty gnarly back then. linas (talk) 16:13, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
- It hasn't. Automake 1.12 (2012) is not compatible with automake 1.10 or 1.11 projects in many cases (eg. libcurl, libexpat). :( — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:4478:5913:88:3E07:54FF:FE18:88EE (talk) 05:42, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
Extending
The article is quite solid but it could be extended a bit with specific information, i.e. what is done after "checking sane build tool". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.108.103.172 (talk) 02:34, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
history request
Would be nice if someone would write a quick history section. Others could improve it after that. Thanks, Daniel.Cardenas (talk) 20:49, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
"Sane build environment"
"Sane build environment" redirects here. Is this reasonable? I doubt it. The phrase "sane build environment" isn't even used on the page. 125.238.252.128 (talk) 04:14, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
- See the original version of that redirect for the rationale. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 11:38, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
Misleading statement
The statement "Automake generates a makefile that allows the user to:" is misleading. Automake does not generate a Makefile that can be used to "Compile the program" or any of the other claims listed. Automake is used to create a "Makefile.in" file, which are used in the process of generating a Makefile. wileyhill@gmail.com 08/26/14 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.21.225.122 (talk) 11:28, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
