A Map workshop request was made to change the New York State map used for rivers. (Requested by 420Traveler on 2021-10-18.) I designed an alternate map which adopted the conversions for location maps, plus the location of Canadarado Lake was drawn to scale on this alternate New York State map.
On 2022-01-29, I changed the pushpin_map on this article as a result of completing this request. This change was reverted Old revision of Canadarago Lake. In retrospect, I should have requested comments from the community before making the change. I propose this map be used. Further comments welcome.
@MB: Sorry about the confusion caused by rolling out a new map. Let me know if you support the change given the explanation and background on the GL/MW request given above. - DutchTreat (talk) 21:12, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
- DutchTreat, I see that the colors of the surrounding states are different (but not Canada). I'm not sure if that is intentional - without a key (which there isn't with this kind of map), it's not clear to the reader what the colors mean. (but if that is a WP universal standard, I guess it's not a big deal). But something about the new map looks distorted. It looks like the width is the same and the height is smaller, New York State is not accurate in the new map. MB 21:27, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
- MB There must be two different projections between the two maps. I see why you are concerned. The projection I used was WGS84/EPSG4326. Let me run a few lat/long tests to validate if this map is accurate or not. - DutchTreat (talk) 21:58, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
- MB After running lat/long tests, I found the map is accurate. Please see my results at User:DutchTreat/Projects/Maps/nys-rivers#Validate. In a few cases toward to south of the map, I believe the map is more accurate. See the Southwestern corner of NYS and Sandy Hook, NJ. - DutchTreat (talk) 12:39, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
- DutchTreat, I don't get it. They appear to the the same width, but different heights. I would have expected more differences. If the rivers map is more accurate, can you replace the old one with a more correct version (it is dated 2007). Or do I need to request that separately. Thanks. MB 15:03, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
- MB I agree that the two different projections give a different view on the vertical size of NYS. To give the effect more detail, I calculated distance per pixel in each dimension for the two maps. The rivers (2022) map has 1 km/px using the WGS84. The Adirondak (2007) map has between 0.72 to 0.75 km/px. Given that the locator LUA module calculates marker placement based on the lat/long bounding boxes. Either map is providing pretty good accuracy. I will wait a few days before making any changes to the article to allow time for more comments by other editors. - DutchTreat (talk) 13:18, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
- Added a version of NYS rivers with grid at 0.5 degrees in both lat and long. - DutchTreat (talk) 12:39, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
