A news item involving Jim Nabors was featured on Wikipedia's Main Page in the In the news section on 30 November 2017. |
His "final time" at the Indy 500?
It is written: "Except for a few absences due to health or other conflicts, Nabors sang the unofficial Indiana anthem every year from 1972 until his final time in 2014."
The "final time"? Says who? As soon as I read those words, I looked to see if Nabors was dead. BUt no, he still lives. Has he lost his voice? There is NO CITATION to back up this statement. LMorland (talk) 05:57, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
Birth year
[1] describes Jim Nabors as being born in 1933. --[[User:OldakQuill|Oldak Quill]] 23:05, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC) In your article, the caption under picture of Jim Nabors says he is 80, which means he had to be born in 1937, yet your article says he was born in 1930. I am confused.74.109.10.29 (talk) 00:10, 27 September 2010 (UTC)
Gay Icon Project
In my effort to merge the now-deleted list from the article Gay icon to the Gay icons category, I have added this page to the category. I engaged in this effort as a "human script", adding everyone from the list to the category, bypassing the fact-checking stage. That is what I am relying on you to do. Please check the article Gay icon and make a judgment as to whether this person or group fits the category. By distributing this task from the regular editors of one article to the regular editors of several articles, I believe that the task of fact-checking this information can be expedited. Thank you very much. Philwelch 20:14, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Before you go adding Nabors to a gay icons list, what evidence do you have as regards Jim Nabor's private life, beyond the usual gossip and speculation? Wahkeenah 23:02, 24 September 2005 (UTC)
Sorry, I spoke too soon. The article points out that being a "gay icon" does not necessarily equate to being gay. I still think, however, that some caution is in order. Is Nabors really a "gay icon"? Is he (or Bob Denver) somebody that gays look up to? Isn't there a huge amount of POV connected with this in any case? And what does it mean anyway? I could say John Wayne is the quintessential "straight icon". But for all I know he could be a "gay icon" as well. It's a matter of taste, likes and dislikes. In other words, major POV. Wahkeenah 23:13, 24 September 2005 (UTC)
One certainly doesn't need to be gay to be a gay icon. I mean, Judy? Liza? Cher? Definitely. And to some, Eddie Izzard is a gay icon.
Shazam! Since when is Jim Nabors a gay icon? His biggests fans are women in my parents' generation, most of whom are straight. Wahkeenah 08:21, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
"Marriage" to Rock Hudson
I think it's not a full aticle, unless coverage is made of the false "marriage" to Rock Hudson. Firstly, that it was key in both actors careers; secondly it was false; thirdly that it broke up a good private friendship; and fourthly that it was the first public hint that Hudson may be gay. I don't think it should be written in the line of "Jim Narbor's is gay" - there is no evidence for that; but not including it is missing a major part of the story. This article seems to give a good retrospective view. Rgds, Trident13 11:46, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- Regardless of your supposedly noble intentions, putting that story in the article carries with it an obvious implication about Nabors' private life. I'm assuming that's your real agenda. Wahkeenah 13:18, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- No - who cares about his orientation, particularly today? But the incident was influential on his career - he found it difficult post that to launch projects via the networks. If that was my intention, I could have just posted it to the article - and secondly, the external article I linked the comment to opens with the statement "Status: FALSE" - which I agree with. Rgds, Trident13 14:36, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- If you can cite a documented argument (not just your opinion) that the rumors hurt his career, that's a different story. And if you think nobody cares about sexual orientation today, you must live in California. A large number of Americans care, whether they should or not, and wishing it were the other way don't make it so. Wahkeenah 14:47, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your comments - I agree, will collect some documentary evidence. Oh, and I choose to live at present in Blairite UK - I think it's the slightly better of two not presently great options! But am aware of the Narbors/Gay issues within the States. Hence discussion rather than article - Rgds, Trident13 18:14, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- You live in "Blairite UK" - well, that explains it - as you will recall, The Sun (Britain's best selling daily newspaper) outted Tony Blair's cabinet as being majority homosexual, i.e. Britain run by homosexuals - amazing but true. I remember one of Margaret Thatcher's favorite TV shows was "Yes, Minister" because she said "that is exactly how it is", and in that TV show, they have the Permanent Undersecretary as an obviously gay man - the reason for doing so was because the upper levels of the civil service in Britain are also largely homosexual. This is a country run by homosexuals (I live in London). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.129.125.82 (talk) 09:27, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

To DREADSTAR [ dishwatery moniker she has...] I don't appreciate the petulant ban-from-edit message. Since when is referring to the Rock Hudson thing vandalism? It actually occurred. You want to hide historical information in an encyclopedia? Its from the Rock Hudson article for Pete's sake. Maybe you'll cruise over to that article, look up the edit history and send more oddball messages to more people... Don't forget to remove the 'Marriage' thing from there, too. You seem awfully sensitive about gay issues, btw. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.225.180.189 (talk) 16:00, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
- One wikipedia article can never be a valid source for another wikipedia article. Look up "Jim Nabors" in a real encyclopedia such as Brittanica or Americana and see if Rock Hudson is mentioned. TheScotch (talk) 09:47, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Nabors is not dead
He didn't marry Rock Hudson. Otherwise he, too, would have died of AIDS. But he isn't; he's cultivating nuts in Hawaii. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.225.172.136 (talk) 14:51, 30 March 2007 (UTC).
- He didn;t marry Rock Hudson becuaes gay men didn't marry until the late 1990s and Rock Hudson was dead by then. AIDs has little to do with it. Marriage does not equal AIDs. The whole discussion is ridiculous... and I do mean all of it. Even my response.--Dr who1975 23:56, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
- Meanwhile, wikipedia cultivates plenty of "nuts" also. Most of them are IP addresses. Wahkeenah 23:58, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Gay
I came to this article to see if this man is gay. I wasn't sure whether it was rumor or truth but I do know that there have been repeated rumors.
Should the article say that he has been the target of gay rumors and list sources? I don't want to smear this man but the controversy over that there have been rumors is more noteworthy than whether he is nor not.
Please discuss. I am undecided at this point. User F203 (talk) 21:09, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
I do know that under the BLP policy, we can't say he's gay if he is not. It doesn't address rumors. With some people, there are no rumors one way or another so BLP dictates that there be no mention. User F203 (talk) 21:10, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
- The Rock Hudson story, which was actually a joke that some took seriously, is discussed in the article. That was a widely-circulated story. Rumors, as such, are usually not allowed due to BLP rules. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots 21:12, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
- Funny, for years I have believed Nabors to be gay because I distinctly recall reading an article about him (probably around the time of his illness) that discussed his home life in Hawaii, and indicated that he'd been living monogamously with a male companion (not Hudson, obviously) for many years. I remember being somewhat surprised at this revelation, and it stuck in my mind. Am I nuts and such an article never existed? (Conversely, BTW, I never heard of the Nabors-Hudson rumors until reading this Wikipedia page!) StanislavJ (talk) 01:38, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

I think you are confusing Nabors with Richard Chamberlain, who we all know IS gay and is living in Hawaii with a longtime companion.--Susan Nunes 3 December 2009 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.140.81.240 (talk) 20:18, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
- Inaccurate. "Richard Chamberlain, who we all know IS gay". I have heard of Chamberlain but other than that, I have no idea who he is. Do not make blanket statements. Stopde (talk) 10:35, 1 February 2013 (UTC)
- But if "Richard Chamberlain, who we all know IS gay and is living in Hawaii with a longtime companion.--Susan Nunes", doesn't that make him straight? Just sayin'... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.64.0.252 (talk) 23:09, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
- No. You need to get your knowledge of punctuation sorted. If it had been:
- "Richard Chamberlain, who we all know IS gay and is living in Hawaii with a longtime companion, Susan Nunes" or
- " .... living in Hawaii with a longtime companion - Susan Nunes" or
- "... living in Hawaii with a longtime companion: Susan Nunes",
- then yes, that would be indentifying Susan Nunes as Chamberlain's partner. But this wasn't that, not remotely. It was a Wikipedia editor named Susan Nunes doing the right thing and signing her post, which read:
- "Richard Chamberlain, who we all know IS gay and is living in Hawaii with a longtime companion". -- Jack of Oz [Talk] 05:22, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

There is a certain kind of physical awkwardness that people associate with being gay, but similar symptoms can have other causes. If a person is truly living alone, speaks in a funny matter, and moves awkwardly it seems to me that Asperger's Syndrome (or autistic features) should also be considered as a possible cause -- rather than just rushing to the "gay" assumption. People with mild autistic spectrum disorders are often wrongly perceived as gay. But such people are often great performers, because the very nature of the disorder requires the sufferer to attempt to act like other people, which does not come naturally -- so they learn to be actors/performers at an early age. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Skysong263 (talk • contribs) 04:42, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

"James Thurston "Jim" Nabors (born June 12, 1930)[1] is a homosexual American actor and singer."
I think that someone ought to change the first sentence of this article, it doesn't seem pertinent to the article as Jim Nabors did not devote his life to gay rights or any such cause. Instead I suggest that mention of his sexuality be moved to personal life as it is on other peoples articles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.253.145.124 (talk) 03:45, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Without context, Nabor's expression seems improper for an infobox photo. IMO, the 2001 photo would be preferable; not only for the reason mentioned, but because it is more recent -- and this article is about the person, not the fictional character. This photo would be fine in section describing Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.. Comments? —2606:A000:4C0C:E200:7851:71F8:C463:FC20 (talk) 19:06, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
- Famous subjects while alive, current images are preferred, however after death the image usually reverts to one of them in their "hay day" so in that respect the current one is of the proper time. I think his "expression" is one known for this character, but one with a smile would be better. - FlightTime (open channel) 19:17, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

Sitcom "Valentine's Day
It seems Nabors had a recurring role on an ABC sitcom, "Valentine's Day," in 1964-65. It was on Friday nights immediately before Gomer Pyle. Per IMDB.com, from Christmas night 1964 through the end of the TV season Nabors appeared in 11 Valentine's episodes in addition to starring in 17 Gomer Pyle episodes.
