Syntax
{{Malay name|[given name]|[patronymic]|note=on (optional)}}
Usage
This template is a hatnote that can be put at the top of a biographical article to explain to readers that the second element of a Malay name is not the family name but a patronymic name, that is, the given name of the subject's father. The parameters that the template takes are listed below:
Parameter | Description |
---|---|
[given name] | Replace this term with the person's given or personal name(s). |
[patronymic] | Replace this term with the person's patronymic name, or father's name. |
note | Optional: if "note=on", the following explanatory note is displayed: "The word "bin" or "binti"/"binte" means 'son of' or 'daughter of', respectively." These abbreviations are often used by Malays in Brunei, Malaysia and Singapore. If "note=off" or the "note" parameter is omitted, the explanatory note is not displayed. |
