Usage

The {{WikiProject Video games}} project banner template should be added (not subst:ed) to the talk page of every article within the scope of the project. While the template does not require any additional parameters, it has a number of optional ones that add various extra features to the banner. All pages should include class and importance, when possible. These parameters will put the page into the appropriate subcategory in WikiProject Video games.

class – valid values are listed in the custom class mask. See the project's quality scale for details. Setting an explicit value of NA is rarely necessary; for this, either leave |class= blank or omit the parameter.
importance – valid values are: top, high, mid, low, na (case-insensitive). See the project's importance scale for details. Setting an explicit value of NA is rarely necessary; for this, either leave |importance= blank or omit the parameter.

esports – set |esports=yes if the article is supported by the esports task force.
- This parameter populates Category:Esports task force articles, and the relevant subcategory of Category:Esports articles by quality based upon the |class= parameter.
Indie – set |Indie=yes if the article is supported by the indie task force.
- This parameter populates Category:Indie video game task force articles, and the relevant subcategory of Category:Indie game articles by quality based upon the |class= parameter.
Nintendo – set |Nintendo=yes if the article is supported by the Nintendo task force.
- This parameter populates Category:Nintendo task force articles, and the relevant subcategory of Category:Nintendo articles by quality based upon the |class= parameter.
Sega – set |Sega=yes if the article is supported by the Sega task force.
- This parameter populates Category:Sega task force articles, and the relevant subcategory of Category:Sega articles by quality based upon the |class= parameter.
Visualnovels – set |Visualnovels=yes if the article is supported by the visual novels task force.
- This parameter populates Category:Visual novels task force articles, and the relevant subcategory of Category:Visual novel-related articles by quality based upon the |class= parameter.
Characters – set |Characters=yes if the article is supported by the Video game characters task force.
- This parameter populates Category:Video game characters task force articles, and the relevant subcategory of Category:Video game characters articles by quality based upon the |class= parameter.
- characters-importance (only used if |Characters=yes is set; uses the same values as |importance=) – Importance rating within the Video game characters task force
  - This importance rating populates the relevant subcategory of Category:Video game characters articles by importance.

reassess – set |reassess=yes This article has been flagged for a reassessment of its current rating.
- This parameter populates Category:Wikipedia video game articles for reassessment.
needs-infobox – set |needs-infobox=yes if the article needs an infobox. Remember that infoboxes are not suitable for all articles, and can overwhelm short articles.
- This parameter populates Category:Video game articles needing infoboxes.
magazine – set |magazine=yes if the article is supported by the Reference Library.
cover – set |cover=yes if the article needs box art or a defining icon.
- This parameter populates Category:Video game articles requesting identifying art.
screenshot – set |screenshot=yes if the article needs a screenshot or image.
- This parameter populates Category:Video game articles requesting screenshots.
- imagedetails – (appears only if |screenshot=yes) Additional details to describe the image that is requested.
needs-photo – set |needs-photo=yes if the article needs a photograph of a person or object.
- This parameter populates Category:Video game articles requesting photos.

peer – set |peer=yes if the article is currently undergoing a peer review, or to request that the peer review process for this page should be begun.
old-peer – set |old-peer=yes if the article has had a peer review which is now archived.
- This parameter populates Category:Old requests for WikiProject Video Games peer review.
- old-peer – if the peer review page exists but is not at Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Peer review/{{SUBJECTPAGENAME}}, set this parameter; i.e. if the peer review page is Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Peer review/Foobar, set |old-peer=Foobar

GCOTW – set |GCOTW=yes if the page is currently the project collaboration.
old-GCOTW – set |old-GCOTW=yes (or any non-blank value other than "no", "n", "0" or "¬", such as the dates it was part of the collaboration) if the page was a past project collaboration.
listas – This parameter, which is the equivalent of the DEFAULTSORT sortkey that should be placed on all biographical articles, is a sortkey for the article talk page (e.g. for Cloud Strife, use |listas=Strife, Cloud so that the talk page will show up in the S's and not the C's of the various assessment and administrative categories; similarly, for topics with titles beginning with an article such as "the" or "a" - e.g. for A Tree of Palme, use |listas=Tree of Palme, A so that the talk page will show up in the T's). This is important because it is one source used by those who set DEFAULTSORT on the article; consider also setting the DEFAULTSORT for the article when setting this parameter. For more information about this, please see Wikipedia:Categorization of people § Ordering names in a category.
If the article is using {{WikiProject banner shell}} then it is preferable to add |listas= to that template instead of a project banner template. Putting the parameter on more than one template is not required.
category – set |category=no if, and only if, a banner is being used for demonstration or testing purposes, to prevent unnecessary or undesirable categorization. Otherwise, omit this parameter.

Aliases

The parameter |eSports= is recognised as an alias for |esports=. If both |esports= and |eSports= are present, |eSports= is ignored.

To avoid needlessly cluttering up talk pages, it is usually appropriate to remove any unused parameters from the template.
