Writing about people

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia, I saw your post on the village pump. The key to understanding Wikipedia is 1. Read every policy and guideline you can find, and always follow bluelinks when someone quotes a rule. It is overwhelming to start with, but after a few days you'll feel comfortable, and after a few months you'll feel like an old timer. 2. Copy what others do - how they interact, what code they use in articles and talk pages, what guidelines they cite, etc. I'd suggest reading these guidelines and essays first as you're thinking about starting articles about people you know:

  • Help:Getting started
  • Wikipedia:Starting an article
  • Wikipedia:Conflict of interest
  • Wikipedia:Autobiography
  • Wikipedia:Notability (people)
  • Wikipedia:Biographies of living people
  • User:Uncle G/On notability

Fences&Windows 22:23, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

And I would ignore the advice that wiooiw gave. He seems to have misunderstood either your question or the relevant policy. OrangeDog (τ • ε) 22:11, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
He may be refering to the WP:DEFACTO. Apparently it is an essay, not a policy. Sorry for that. wiooiw (talk) 22:41, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it basically works that you must follow policy, you probably should follow guidelines, and you might want to follow what essays say. And we also have a policy called ignore all rules, which means that if some rules is getting in the way of improving the encyclopedia it can be OK to bend or break it (with discretion). Welcome to WP:MILHIST!

[edit]

Hi, and welcome to the Military history WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to military history.

A few features that you might find helpful:

  • Our navigation box points to most of the useful pages within the project.
  • The announcement and open task box is updated very frequently. You can watchlist it if you are interested, or you can add it directly to your user page by copying the following: {{WPMILHIST Announcements}}.
  • Important discussions take place on the project's main discussion page; it is highly recommended that you watchlist it.
  • The project has several departments, which handle article quality assessment, detailed article and content review, writing contests, and article logistics.
  • We have a number of task forces that focus on specific topics, nations, periods, and conflicts.
  • We've developed a style guide that covers article structure and content, template use, categorization, and many other issues of interest.
  • If you're looking for something to work on, there are many articles that need attention, as well as a number of review alerts.
  • The project has a stress hotline available for your use.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask any of the project coordinators or any other experienced member of the project, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome, and we are looking forward to seeing you around! —Ed (talk • majestic titan) 06:59, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Two judges per week.

[edit]

Greetings! At Wikipedia:WikiProject United States courts and judges, we have bot-created thousands of articles on United States federal judges. Of those 1,272 currently still have their bot-made cleanup tag. If just a dozen editors will each commit to cleaning up just two of those articles every week, we will conquer the entire list within the year. Most of the articles are quick and easy to clean up, requiring only a few minor adjustments of bot-created awkward wording. Please consider joining this effort, and committing to cleaning up two judges per week for the year. Cheers! bd2412 T 03:18, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your draft article, User:Tetobigbro/Novels/Elyon (novel)

[edit]

Hello Tetobigbro. It has been over six months since you last edited your WP:AFC draft article submission, entitled "Novels/Elyon (novel)".

The page will shortly be deleted. If you plan on editing the page to address the issues raised when it was declined and resubmit it, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code. Please note that Articles for Creation is not for indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you want to retrieve it, copy this code: {{subst:Refund/G13|User:Tetobigbro/Novels/Elyon (novel)}}, paste it in the edit box at this link, click "Save page", and an administrator will in most cases undelete the submission.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. Rotideypoc41352 (talk) 21:18, 22 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've also nominated your other drafts for deletion. Rotideypoc41352 (talk) 17:29, 25 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

March Madness 2017

[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. The World Destubathon

[edit]

Hello. You're invited to participate in The World Destubathon. We're aiming to destub a lot of articles and also improve longer stale articles. It started today on Monday June 16 and will run until Sunday July 13. There is over $3300 going into it, with $500 the top prize. If you are interested in winning something to save you money in buying books for future content, or just see it as a good editathon opportunity to see a lot of articles improved for subjects which interest you, sign up on the page in the participants section if interested. I'm hoping to see some of our older stale US articles improved! Even if you can only manage a few articles they would be very much appreciated and help make the content produced as diverse and broad as possible! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:11, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
