Shorthand for Ephraem Sȳrus, borrowed from Ancient Greek Ἐφραίμ ὁ Σῦρος (Ephraím ho Sûros). Note the difference in prosody from Attic Σῠ́ρος (Súros, “Syrian”) and its coincidence with the island's name above - this may reflect the breakdown of Attic prosody, or a regional pronunciation.
