From Malay bangsa, from Classical Malay بڠسا (bangsa), from Old Malay vaṃśa, from Sanskrit वंश (vaṃśá, “offspring, lineage, collection”). Doublet of wangsa. Cognate of Tagalog bansa (“nation”).
