From Proto-Uralic *tälwä (“winter”). Cognates include Southern Mansi тӓ̄л (tǟl), Northern Mansi та̄л (tāl), Moksha тяла (ťala), Erzya теле (ťeľe), Finnish talvi and Estonian talv.[1][2]
