Afrozul Haq (30 March 1955) is an Indian scientist specialising in vitamin D research. Haq is recognised for his contributions to public health and nutrition, particularly concerning vitamin D deficiency.[1] He is the Founding President and Conference Chair of the International Conference on Vitamin D Deficiency, Nutrition, and Human Health, where he promotes global awareness on nutritional health challenges and solutions.[2]
Early life and education
Haq was born on 30 March 1955 into a Muslim Rajput family in Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh, India. Haq pursued his undergraduate and master’s degrees in chemistry at Meerut University, graduating with a B.Sc. in 1973 and an M.Sc. in 1975.[3] He continued his academic journey at Aligarh Muslim University, where he completed an M.Phil. in 1981 and a Ph.D. in chemistry in 1984. His doctoral research was conducted under the interdisciplinary research program of Aligarh Muslim University in collaboration with Tulane University Medical Center, New Orleans, USA.[4]
Career
Haq began his career in clinical and biochemical research after completing his doctoral studies. From 1985 to 1987, he was awarded a fellowship by the French government, allowing him to work as a Research Associate at INSERM and the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France. Upon returning to India, he held a position as a Research Officer at the National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi.[5]
In 1988, Haq joined King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia,[6] where he worked for over a decade, eventually becoming the Scientist and Head of the Protein Chemistry and Reproductive Biology Laboratory. Here, he made significant contributions to immunological research and protein chemistry, solidifying his expertise in clinical research.[7]
In 2001, he moved to the United Arab Emirates to serve as the Head of the Biochemical Diseases Investigation Laboratory at Mafraq Hospital in Abu Dhabi. Later, he held the position of Senior Clinical Scientist and Head of Referral Services in the Department of Laboratory Medicine at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, Abu Dhabi, from 2006 to 2014,[8] which was managed by the Cleveland Clinic, USA. During this period, Haq also served as Chairman of the Research Ethics Committee and Continuing Medical Education at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, demonstrating his leadership in healthcare ethics and professional education.[9] In 2014, he joined VPS Healthcare in Abu Dhabi as the Principal Scientist and Director of Medical Laboratories' Technical Affairs, where he contributed to the development of advanced laboratory and diagnostic services until 2016.[10]
In 2017, Haq returned to India, where he took up the role of Professor and Head of the Department of Food Technology and served as Dean at the School of Interdisciplinary Sciences and Technology, Jamia Hamdard University, New Delhi.[11][12] In 2023, Haq has also provided his expertise as an advisor to the World Health Organisation (WHO), offering guidance on public health policies and programs, particularly those related to nutrition and vitamin D deficiency.[13]
Throughout his career, Haq has published over 145 peer-reviewed articles, covering a range of topics in biochemistry, clinical nutrition, and public health.[14] His research has been widely cited and recognised for its practical applications in clinical and public health settings. He serves as the managing guest editor for the Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and has overseen numerous publications on advancements in steroid research, particularly relating to vitamin D, facilitating a platform for global research dissemination.[15]
He is currently a member of Sigma Xi and a former member of the Royal Society of Medicine.
Personal life
Haq is a family man with two sons. Beyond his scientific contributions, he has shown commitment to humanitarian initiatives. In 2008, he expressed plans to help establish a school for underprivileged girls in India, demonstrating his dedication to social causes beyond the field of health.[16]
