Clément Hongler (born 1985 in Geneva) is a Swiss mathematician and physicist. He is a professor of mathematics at EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) and the head of the Chair of Statistical Field Theory..[1]
Career
Clément Hongler received his M.Sc. in mathematics from the EPFL in 2008. Under the direction of Stanislav Smirnov, he earned his Ph.D. in 2010 at the University of Geneva for his thesis on "Conformal Invariance of Ising Model Correlations."[2] From September 2010 to July 2014, he worked as a Ritt Assistant Professor at Columbia University.[3]
He has served as the Chair of Statistical Field Theory (CSFT) at EPFL since July 2014, first as a tenure track assistant professor, and as an associate professor since 2018.[1]
Research
Hongler has worked on lattice models and their relationships to statistical mechanics, quantum field theory, and machine learning.
In 2018, Hongler, along with Arthur Jacot, and Franck Gabriel introduced the neural tangent kernel (NTK) [4], allowing artificial neural networks to be studied using theoretical tools from kernel methods. Subsequently, Hongler's research has included topics in deep learning, decentralized systems, artificial life, and large language models.[5]
Distinctions
Hongler received the 2014 Blavantik Awards for Young Scientists[6] and the 2017 Latsis University Prize[7]
