The statement "No information is available on the chronic effects of DBCP in humans", while lifted directly from the quoted source is misleading, especially as the source lists several chronic exposure effects, e.g., "Chronic exposure to DBCP causes male reproductive effects". In particular, this page could benefit from discussion of the sterility claims of Costa Rican banana workers, especially in the period after DBCP was banned for use in the US but allowed to be transported to other countries.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mdwik (talk • contribs).
- The article doesn't even mention its continued use in Central America after it was banned in the USA, http://www.inthesetimes.com/article/2096/
Metabolism and possible treatment
In rats a portion of the DBCP dose was shown to be excreted as mercapturic acids products. It is common for halogenated hydrocarbons to deplete the animal's cysteine stores, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. Therefore, it would make sense to supplement the diet with cysteine, this should minimize the adverse effects on protein synthesis of DBCP and also help in the elimination of DBCP.
