Change of article title
In light of the fact that George 'Gabby' Hayes appeared in 191 motion pictures without once ever being billed simply as "Gabby Hayes," but ALWAYS with "George" as part of his onscreen billing, I wonder if there might not have been at least a little bit of discussion before this change was made. - A point well taken, in addition to the fact that all reference books also list the subject as George "Gabby" Hayes. In fact, the only time he was billed as Gabby Hayes was in the final stage of his career as host of the long-running children's television show, which indicated The Gabby Hayes Show, starring Gabby Hayes. Thus, although he was universally-known by his familiar stage name, encyclopedic standards require the guideline of film credits and reference works, necessitating the restoration of the main title header to George "Gabby" Hayes. As to the quotes around "Gabby", IMDb tends to use single quotes, but the Turner Classic Movies website, most of the reference books and, most importantly, the on-screen credits, use double quotes.—Roman Spinner (talk) 14:58, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
a better photo?
I realize not every photo is avaialable for use. But George Hayes was a handsome man (yes), and though the photo used is appropriate, it is not particularly flattering. Someone should find a photo that shows him to better advantage. (I have one taken at around the age of 50 which I interpret as an attempt to make him look "sexy".) It might also be nice to say something about his acting ability. He stole practically every scene he was in, and not because he was an amusing codger who talked funny. "Survivors"
I've deleted the survivor information posted on 7 Aug 2009, as the citation provided does not contain any of the information being cited, and because there is a considerable problem inherent, it seems to me, in a man who had no children having a grandchild, particularly a grandchild for whom there is no citation available that hasn't been provided by the "grandchild." Until better sourcing of this material is provided, it will continue to be deleted as spurious. Monkeyzpop (talk) 19:34, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
skewed emphasis?
Though George 'Gabby' Hayes is remembered principally for his sidekick roles, he appeared in other parts that aren't mentioned. In Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, he has a brief speech thanking Longfellow Deeds for what he's doing. It's odd to see him beardless and speaking in his more or less "normal" voice.
This article could be twice as long without exhausting the subject. For example, no mention is made that his wife not only appeared in vaudeville, but was a Ziegfeld girl. And there's the anecdote about his housekeeper being frightened at seeing him shaved. There should also be a "not to be confused with" disclaimer for George Hayes, the British actor.
It's unfortunate that Wikipedia's "no original research" rule prohibits comments on his acting ability. He's one of those performers so universally beloved that (it appears) no one has ever seriously evaluated his skills as a performer. I'll start looking, but don't expect to find anything.
