"Steamer" origin
It would be difficult to believe that the nickname "Steamer" was primarily for his style of play. If it was, certainly other players would have had the same nickname, before and after Smyl.
The Stanley Steamer was a famous steam-powered automobile in the early 20th century. Hockey fans who also happened to like old cars probably chose the name for Smyl because of its familiarity, more than its suitability - assuming Smyl wasn't known for being slow or obsolete.
