Hopeful Farm (talk) 20:01, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
How references work
Simple references
These require two parts;
- a)
Chzz is 98 years old.<ref> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref> He likes tea. <ref> [http://www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com Tea website] </ref>
- b) A section called "References" with the special code "{{reflist}}";
== References == {{reflist}}
(an existing article is likely to already have one of these sections)
To see the result of that, please look at user:chzz/demo/simpleref. Edit it, and check the code; perhaps make a test page of your own, such as user:Hopeful Farm/reftest and try it out.
Named references
Chzz was born in 1837, <ref name="MyBook"> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref> in Footown.<ref name="MyBook"/>
Note that the second usage has a / (and no closing ref tag). This needs a reference section as above; please see user:chzz/demo/namedref to see the result.
Citation templates
You can put anything you like between <ref> and </ref>, but using citation templates makes for a neat, consistent look;
Chzz has 37 Olympic medals. <ref> {{Citation | last = Smith | first = John | title = Olympic medal winners of the 20th century | publication-date = 2001 | publisher = [[Cambridge University Press]] | page = 125 | isbn = 0-521-37169-4 }} </ref>
Please see user:chzz/demo/citeref to see the result.
For more help and tips on that subject, see user:chzz/help/refs.

- OH, and with a quick skim through your talk page, I wanted to add:
- 1. Change your password and only tell people you know about it. (Like I tell my sis because she is obsessed with horses and edits the articles once in a while.)
- 2. Feel free to ask questions and don't be afraid to make mistakes. It took me a year and 2 deleted articles to get the hang of it.

I have it answered for you. (I told Hersfold I was)
Hi. I am Rascal the Peaceful. I saw the message on Hersfold's talk. You can't block SineBot because you aren't an admin. He isn't a real robot either, they just call him a bot because he is a user run by a script that tells the bot to sign talk page discussions that were not signed. I won't sign this so you can see what I mean. (Come back to this discussion 2 minutes afterwards to see what it is the bot will put.) Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rascal the Peaceful (talk • contribs) 19:24, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

- Rascal's pretty much right. When I say I've "blocked Sinebot from editing my talk page," though, I haven't actually blocked him. SineBot is programmed to respond to Template:nobots and Template:bots - these templates can be used on pages to tell certain bots that they are or are not allowed to edit that page. Generally, you shouldn't use these templates except on your own talk page, though. If you want to use them, click on those links to see instructions about how. Hope this helps. Re:hey hey!!!!
Hey to you too! ☺ I assume you are talking about this:, and if you are, I can easily tell you how to do it. If you already have an image or piece of text that you want to use, just put this code somewhere on your page:
{{User:1ne/ title|YOUR PICTURE GOES HERE}}
If you do not have an image already, I will gladly create and upload one with the name of your choice. Just tell me how you want it to look... it may take a few tries to get it right, but I'll do my best. By the way where in Texas do you live? I may have been through that town once or twice.

- Hmmm thanks! Though I had to do it three times. Guess I'm lucky to even find someone to let me use a pic. Mind telling me how Flickr works? Mhera (talk) 18:16, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
- Gee, only three times? I've had to try more than that! LOL!
- As for Flickr, go to Flickr.com and surf around until you figure out how to search and find the free images (they will be the ones that are either Creative Commons--CC or "some rights reserved" or Public Domain, AND must have no restrictions on commercial use--many images there do restrict commercial use, unfortunately). Once you find the images you want, go to Commons, click on upload, and then click on the link that says you are uploading an image from Flickr, they direct you to this sort of odd page where you can enter the data on the flickr image (there's a number attached to every photo there, it's always in the URL if not elsewhere) and this automated page will either tell you it's not a free image (hence you can't use it), or they will automatically plug all the info about the image into the upload box (I can't figure out how to make the image go too, I usually have to download and re-upload the image, but there has GOT to be an easier way) -- you can edit the info (like taking out the Flickr categories or changing the caption, etc) in commons if you need to. An example of an article that contains several images I personally dug up from Flicrk and uploaded are in the articles Equestrian vaulting and Budweiser Clydesdales. Speedy deletion nomination of Ackar
A tag has been placed on Ackar, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent. If the page you created was a test, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions about this.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. <>Multi-Xfer<> (talk) 21:10, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Ackar
The article Ackar has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Non-notable fictional character. No independent, reliable, third party references to establish notability.
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}}
will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. <>Multi-Xfer<> (talk) 21:36, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Bionicle characters
You should slow down on the creation of new articles. Individual Bionicle characters are generally not going to be notable enough for their own articles. Other "Wikia" sites are not considered to be reliable sources for the purpose of verification, which is required for all Wikipedia articles. Additionally, articles should be written from a real world perspective as opposed to the in-universe style you have used. As a result, I am converting those pages to redirects as they do not meet the basic criteria for articles as outlined at the five pillars of Wikipedia. Please consider reading your first article before creating any more pages. I notice you are interested in adoption, it would be a good idea to get your adopter to review any new articles for you before posting them. You can create articles as user subpages and work on them there until they are ready to "go live." Beeblebrox (talk) 18:07, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
- I know how to do articles. Have you looked at the talk page? Talk: Ackar. I can keep up. If you think I don't know how to make articles....Namib desert horse would be a good place to look. Also the wikia has a good source of information and is true. What's the in universe style? Don't quite understand it. I'm not done. Mhera (talk) 18:10, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
- Please carefully re-read my previous message. These Bionicle articles you are creating are not appropriate, regardless of what other articles you may have created. In universe style refers to the way you are describing these characters based on their actions and accomplishments within the framework of the Bionicle "universe." What is needed is to establish why they are individually notable in the actual real world that we live in. I seriously doubt it will be possible to do that, as most reliable sources are not going to report on such a thing. The reason the desert horse article is not being deleted or redirected is because it contains proper references to actual reliable sources, not just a lego wikia site. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:15, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
- Do you know anything about Bionicle? Ackar is notable. So is Tarix. If I start to rewrite it, trying to make it better, will you delete it again? Mhera (talk) 18:21, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
- This isn't just what I think, it's Wikipedia policy. Please read and understand The five pillars of Wikipedia. These are the core policies of the entire project. Verifiability is one of the few things here that is not negotiable. If you insist on pursuing this, yes I will probably initiate a articles for deletion discussion on this matter, and it's highly unlikely the articles would be kept. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:27, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
- I have read the five pillars. I try to follow them. Give me a little time to rewrite the article. Then I'll get a Bionicle editor to help out. It's not going to be perfect first time out. And I insist on going on. I'm pretty sure there are other bionicle characters. I'm going to check it out and compare with my article. You'll probably find they're kept and are similar. I know a lot about Bionicles and am searching google right now. Mhera (talk) 18:30, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
- Hey people, let's chill. Beeblebrox, we have a newbie here, so even if you're right, please be nicer, and Click here! (smile) Mhera, if I were you, I'd make a sandbox (click here to start it: User:Hopeful Farm/Sandbox 1) and copy and paste the last version you had of the article into it, and then you can keep it safe and keep working on it until it is to the point where it might survive if you think it's notable enough to put forward again. (Also see if WP:NOTABILITY is of any help) I know squat about the topic, but usually cartoon, video game, and other fantasy world characters are given really strict scrutiny in Wikipedia because there are so very many of them. You might compare your article to those covering fictional characters in similar genres -- sort of figure out when characters become significant enough to get their own articles and when they do not. Maybe compare X-Men or Pokemon or something (see, I know squat about the topic...) I recall there was a real spat over a list of horses in the Lord of the Rings series, and I honestly forget what happened, but that would be another comparison. There is a big ongoing and probably never-to-be-resolved debate on wikipedia over notability. Me, I draw the line at the WP:GARAGE, but then I also created the article on beet pulp, so all I can suggest is to preserve your work in a sandbox and dig around a bit into wiki-politics until you can figure out if Beeblebrox is being too harsh but IS correct, or if he's being too fussy and biting you. (I honestly couldn't tell you which because I am ignorant on the topic). Now, all, as you were. Montanabw(talk) 03:09, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
Mhera, the characters you are trying to make pages for are notable, but not notable enough to be granted their own pages on Wikipedia. That's why we have Wikias for. What you could try doing is incoperating your articles into a list (or one that exists already, as they're probably will be). It's not that your articles are bad, it's just that we don;t have a seperate article for every single thing, or else we would have millions of articls with very little infomation on them, as opposed to structured articles with a fair amount of infomation. The latter looks better. Oh, and this in-universe thing is about Point Of View. You will notice that many Wikias, such as the Doctor Who and Star Wars one, write their articls as if the thing is from the point of view of the character in the fiction, as opposed from our point of view, whatching them through a screen and knowing it is fiction. You might be able to understand it better if you read this. You'll notice it uses as an example : Instead of
"...Liz Shaw is a fictional character in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who..."
Use
"...Liz Shaw was a companion of the Doctor's third incarnation during the early part of his exile on Earth..."
It is vice verca with Wikipedia, in which case it would be correct to use the former, not the latter.
I hope this clears up things. :) --Imagine Wizard (talk • contribs • count) Iway amway Imagineway Izardway. 15:06, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
- smiles* :) It's not that I can't get enough information. I get a lego magazine with plenty of info on them. It's going to be hard to find ways to put it in real life words. I noticed we have zero bionicle articles. They only have a list. I can make a whole article. It's just the problem of writing it out of universe style. Image Wizard that's a good idea. Thanks Montanabw. Those links help. :) First time I tried to do something like this. (Hehe second article) Mhera (talk) 19:17, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
- I'm glad you are a wiki-adoptee! Congrats!! You have a lot of good energy and enthusiasm. It can be kind of tough on wiki, so keep your chin up and your hide as rhino-thick as possible: you are running with a lot of people who have real life stuff happening that makes them grumpy wikipedians -- like insecure college students on break, the middle-aged frustrated cubicle dweller, the work-avoidant yuppie professional (s'moi? NEVER!!), the retired curmudgeon, and well, just the whole human gamut. My own motto is to beware of people who say things like "next year I will graduate with a degree in..." Oh dear. Just remember, On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog.
