Welcome to WikiProject RISC OS. A number of Wikipedians have formed this collaboration resource and group dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of RISC OS and the organization of information and articles on this topic. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions and various resources; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians interested in the topic. If you would like to help, please join the project, enquire on the talk page and see the to-do list below.

Goals

[edit]
  • Raise the quality and expand the range of the articles about RISC OS, its hardware and software.
    • For articles of Top and High importance, the target is good article. It may be appropriate to have a target of featured article in some circumstances.
  • Create new articles on notable RISC OS related topics.
  • Spread awareness of RISC OS, in a respectful and realistic manner, to other Wikipedians.

Scope

[edit]
  • Within the English Wikipedia, all articles relating to RISC OS capable hardware, the OS itself, OS components, RISC OS software and games, companies and individuals that provided hardware/software for the platform. Note: Where appropriate, please follow the guidance for biographies of living persons.
  • Through collaboration with speakers of other languages, include information sharing with other Wikipedias, perhaps by requesting translations of articles of an acceptable quality:
French Wikipedia
  • Projet:Informatique, Projet:Traduction (e.g. Discussion:An Open Letter to Hobbyists/Traduction)

Guidelines

[edit]
  • Be neutral.
    • Place your experience of RISC OS within the context of the wider world of Operating Systems and software.
    • When dealing with software or companies that came to be larger or more well known for their non-RISC OS work, be careful not to place undue prominence on their RISC OS work.
  • Stick to the facts, avoid hyperbole, reference everything with reliable sources. Have fun.
  • Of course follow the standard Wikipedia guidelines for article editing. In particular the Five Pillars.
  • Follow guidance for getting articles classified as good or featured.
  • The creation of new articles should (for your first article) ideally be done using the Article wizard, which automatically includes a review process.
  • Some comprehensive advice (containing useful links) is given at Your first article.
  • You may also want to initially create such articles in your own userspace.
  • When trying to make sense of an article's edit history, reference can be made to the glossary of commonly used abbreviations.
  • Make technical articles understandable (and WP:LEADLINK)

Use of images

[edit]
  • Free content is one of the five "pillars" of Wikipedia.
  • This applies to all media, including images.
  • Copyright holders may be requested to licence their work under free use. It is advised that this be done using a standard email template.
  • Where a free equivalent is not available or could not be created (e.g. copyrighted works), non-free content may be permissible. In this case, you may wish to include File:Wikipedia non-free placeholder.png within userspace article drafts.
  • To create a free screenshot
  • Have to use a free operating system?

Articles

[edit]

Articles are added into the project by the use of the {{WikiProject Computing}} banner on the Article's Talk page, adding in the riscos=yes and riscos-importance=Low/Mid/High/Top fields.

Note that the importance of an article within WikiProject RISC OS is not the same as its importance in WikiProject Computing. When assessing articles, take care not to inflate the computing importance. Most articles in this project have general computing importance=low. (RISC OS itself has general computing importance=mid.) If you're uncomfortable assessing the general computing importance, you can leave it blank.

The following is a suggestion as to how to internally grade using the riscos-importance parameter.

Suggested riscos-importance level criteria
Rating Suggestions
Top RISC OS
High Hardware platforms, Key Companies, Key OS Components
Mid Key Software and Games, People, Publications, Other Companies, Other OS Components
Low Other Software, Games, People and Publications

The bot runs daily or so (click here for manual update) to update this table of items in the RISC OS project.
